News report on Exploring the wave of violence in Manipur

Lates updates about Manipur incident

- By Sarah Khan

The violence at Manipur flared up with a plan of Manipuri government to give the Meitei group status of Scheduled Tribes which would give them access to quotas in government jobs and colleges under India’s affirmative action policy. The Naga and Kuki tribe doesn't support this decision.

The state government has used Article 355 to take over the security of Manipur and has issued a "short at sight" order. As a result of violence, curfew was imposed, internet was banned and army has been called.

At least 58 people have been killed and thousands homeless due to ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki tribes in Manipur, northeastern India. Manipur's residents of Manipur reported that the rule of law bridge and order had been broken as per the government's orders to 'see and fight' for the 'serious' situation

Manipur Cheif Minister N Biren Singh has called for peace and calm in the state and started to relocate the evacuees. The situation in Manipur has sparked calls for an independent state in India, some say "the only answer is separation"

Measures have been taken to contain the situation, Manipur has not reported any adverse events for the past two days. But tensions remain as violence affects law and order in the state. The citizens and authorities are hoping for a peaceful solution to this issue.
